Invite Children To Your Wedding?

There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to whether or not you should invite children to your wedding.   Of course, it's a matter of personal preference but I didn't know just how heated this topic could get.   A family member married recently and opted for an "Adult Only Reception" (actually it was an adult only ceremony and reception since both were held in the same space).    She printed this on invitations and repeated this to invitees when asked if their children could attend.   I could not believe how many family members challenged her request.

While waiting in line to pick up my son's rental tux, a weary groom-to-be shared with me his frustration with the planning process.   I thought, "typical groom" until he lamented about the part that gave him the most angst.    After he and his bride-to-be dropped the "Adult Only" bomb via their invitations, family members and close friends bombarded them with phone calls, emails and text messages.   They insisted on knowing why they didn't want children at the reception.    He said that some even asked if it was for financial reasons and offered to save him a few bucks by supplying chicken fingers and juice boxes for their tikes!

Am I missing something?  Are parents now going everywhere with their children in tow?    Is it unlawful to have a reception without wee ones present?    Why is it so hard for guests to respect a couple's decision to have an adult affair?

If your wedding reception will include children, here are some ways to keep them entertained.
